Get valuable insight from Script2Screen

ScriptBook’s Script2Screen-solution focuses on the storytelling metric. By employing artificial intelligence to analyze screenplays, our Script2Screen-solution delivers an objective assessment of a script's commercial and critical success.

Our artificial intelligent analysis is not only objective, it is also fair. It treats every screenplay equally with no bias.

At ScriptBook our aim is to help profitable films become the rule without giving up on creativity and compelling storytelling.

“

It’s the storyline, stupid!”

Many factors can contribute to a film's failure: bad acting, bad directing, bad distribution strategy. But one of the better predictive factors to a film’s success is the screenplay. Research shows that the storyline has the highest correlation to critical & commercial success than any other element: directing, acting, marketing, etc.

In other words, scripts have an inherent predictive value.

Technology

Creativity is Artificial Intelligence having fun

Just as every sector has been challenged by technology, creative industries are not immune to the shifts and change instigated by the digital world. Artificial intelligence has been taking massive strides in the last decade and is applied in an ever increasing set of domains including finance, sports, recommendation systems, etc.

Current A.I. solutions come very close or even surpass human performance in many fields such as image recognition, speech recognition and games such as Go and more recently Poker. Technological tools feel threatening to professionals in film & television because of a fear that it renders hard-earned human expertise obsolete. This misplaced fear of technological change in the film business kills creativity and proliferates so-called tentpoles.

At ScriptBook, we believe that by unifying technology and storytelling, we will enhance innovation and bring back originality in film and television.

ScriptBook = Hindsight + Foresight + Insight

hindsight

Hindsight =

Datamining

Hindsight is learning from past mistakes in order to build expertise. Hindsight involves critical reflection in order to integrate knowledge gained from the past with other sources.

Qualitative data mining refers to computational methods to gather, process and analyze large quantities of textual data (film scripts), to extract and exploit interesting patterns.

ScriptBook trained its algorithms on a large historical dataset of film scripts which have had a cinematic release between 1970 and 2016, making it possible to detect patterns and extract features that compelling storylines have in common.

foresight

Foresight =

Machine Learning + Natural Language Processing

Machine Learning is about foresight. Machine Learning comprises of a set of tools that allow computers to "learn", by examining data about past cases with known outcomes (called “training data” or “previously released movies”).
Using this data it builds a model that can be tested by making predictions on other known cases (a set of released movies left out of the training process). The final model can be used to predict the commercial and critical success of new film scripts.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) deals with making a machine "understand" the structure and the meaning of written text. Using a combination of statistical strategies and external sources of knowledge, it is possible to extract semantics and topical concepts from a raw stream of words, which encode valuable information about the content. Applying NLP algorithms on scripted narratives such as a screenplays is challenging because relevant information often depends on subtle and complicated variables, including slang, subtext and social context.

insight

Insight =

Feature Engineering

Insight is only possible when we put hindsight and foresight together to create knowledge that can be used for present decision making. Feature Engineering is an art, like writing is an art, like acting is an art. At ScriptBook, we spend most of our efforts in engineering story-based features (parameters).
Story-based parameters have to be created manually. This requires spending a lot of time with actual sample data (film scripts) and thinking about the underlying form of the problem, structures in the data and how best to expose them to predictive modeling algorithms.

Within ScriptBook our feature selection algorithms use a scoring method to rank and choose features that correlate well with commercial or critical success. Engineering meaningful representations of narratives requires a unique blend of machine learning, NLP and screenwriting domain knowledge. It also is ScriptBook’s secret sauce.

Passengers: An analysis by ScriptBook

Using our Script2Screen-technology, we performed full analysis on the “Passengers” script in September 2015. Keep in mind that at the time this film project was still in “pre-production” stage. Using only the film script as input for our analysis, we predicted that “Passengers” would earn $118.1M at the US box office. “Passengers” is currently still playing in US theaters and according to Box Office Mojo, the movie earned $100M in domestic ticket sales as of April 20th.

Proof of Value

ScriptBook embarked on a validity study with an unnamed Hollywood studio. Our Script2Screen-solution performed an analysis on a small scale sample of 62 films released by Hollywood studios between 2015 and 2016.

The results of this validity study showed that, using only the screenplay as input, our A.I. decision support system gave a greenlight to all films that performed well at the US box office (30 out of 62 films)

greenlight

More importantly, our intelligent Script2Screen-solution was highly effective in eliminating those films that received a false greenlight by Hollywood studios (22 out of 62 films).

The Hollywood studios gave a false greenlight to 32 films out of 62, while ScriptBook identified correctly 22 films out of this pool as box office failures.

This means that our Script2Screen-solution increases total attainable profit potential, by preventing production of most value destructing titles.

About

About ScriptBook

ScriptBook was born out of one of Hollywood's greatest catastrophes. When founder and CEO Nadira Azermai was a college student, she got the chance to intern on a box office flop. Inspired by the film's failure, she wrote her Master’s thesis in applied economics on using artificial intelligence to quantify story-parameters into a predictive model that would enable stakeholders in film business to avoid box office flops.

By the end of 2014, Nadira decided to revisit her thesis, which eventually led to the incorporation of the company in 2015, and the rest is as they say history…
